This course, Social Media – Use and Abuse, critically examines the role of social media in modern society, exploring its profound influence on media and democracy. Through a combination of theoretical readings, case studies, and hands-on digital analysis, you will investigate the historical evolution of social media, its business models, and its ethical, social, and political implications. Topics such as algorithmic bias, digital activism, cancel culture, and the future of AI-generated content will be explored, alongside the challenges of misinformation, data privacy, and online harassment. Students will engage in assignments, discussions, and a final case study presentation, culminating in a comprehensive understanding of both the power and pitfalls of social media. By the end of the course, students will develop strategies for responsible social media use and critically assess its impact on individuals and society.
