This course provides a sociological examination of poverty as a complex and multidimensional social issue. Students will explore the concepts, theories, and methods used to understand and measure poverty, while critically examining its social, economic, political, and cultural dimensions. The course considers the experiences of different groups living in poverty and analyzes the factors that contribute to and sustain poverty in contemporary society. Drawing on examples from Guyana, the Caribbean, and the wider global context, students will evaluate approaches to poverty reduction and develop a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with promoting social justice and sustainable development. Through lectures, discussions, case studies, and tutorials, students will strengthen their critical thinking skills and apply sociological perspectives to real-world issues related to poverty.
